Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been in Australia since 1840

The word saint means a regular member of the Church.  Thus, the organisation is Christs church for members in the days preceding his second coming.

It is one of the fastest growing Christian faiths in Australia with over 110,500 members, part of a worldwide membership of 12 million in 165 nations.

It is the fifth largest Christian faith in the U.S.A.; the second largest in California; and the sixth largest in New Zealand.  Up to a third of the population of some Pacific Island nations are Latter-day Saints.

There are more than 180 chapels in Australia that are used to accommodate nearly 300 congregations.

In 1984, the first temple in Australia was dedicated in Sydney.  In 2000/2001, three more temples were opened in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.  An additional temple was built in Brisbane in 2003.  Temples focus on the eternal family.  The family is fundamental to the Churchs doctrine and practice.

Nearly 1,000 missionaries from throughout the world serve in Australia, over a quarter of whom are from Australia and New Zealand.  Close to a hundred Australian missionaries are serving volunteer missions in other countries.

Seven missions are established in Australia.  Each mission supervises up to 180 missionaries with companionships serving in most Australian towns.  As well as sharing the gospel, missionaries also give community service to those in need.
