The Growth of the Church

It took 117 years - from 1830 to 1947 - for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to reach one million members throughout the world. In just another 16 years, however, the two-million mark was passed, and since then the dramatic international expansion of the Church has continued. Eight more years took the membership to three million, seven more to four million and four more years to five million. Membership is currently increasing at about 300,000 new members each year. There are over 11 million members of the Church worldwide, with half of the members residing outside of North America.

North and South America, Northern Europe and the South Pacific have traditionally been among the most fertile proselyting areas for missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. More recently, membership has been growing in Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe.
